Oncology

Cancer can seem like a terrible diagnosis in your pet, but that is not always the case. There are some types of cancer that can be cured, and others that can be controlled with medication. The Oncology Service at the Animal Emergency and Specialty Center can give you the information about your pet's cancer that will help you make the decision that is best for you and your pet. Dr. O'Keefe will meet with you and discuss the type of cancer your pet has. She will give you information regarding the types of treatments that are available and will discuss what treatment outcomes you can expect. She will also discuss potential side effects of treatment, and estimated costs. To better answer these questions for you, she may need to recommend additional diagnostic testing including radiographs (x-rays), abdominal ultrasound, and/or blood tests.

The Oncology Service can also help in the situation where your veterinarian suspects that your pet has cancer but doesn't have a definitive diagnosis. Needle aspirates, needle biopsies, surgical biopsies, blood tests, radiographs, and ultrasound are some of the tools used to help get a definitive diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, Dr O'Keefe will be able to go through prognosis and treatment options with you.
